Transportation to Airport from Delhi City Center

Indira Gandhi Intl. Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport is located 16 km from the New Delhi city center. Indira Gandhi International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country. One of the easiest transportation alternatives to get to the airport from the city center is by using your hotel’s airport shuttle service. If your hotel does not provide an airport shuttle service then other methods of transportation include taxis, buses, or the metro.

We would recommend having local currency on you at all times. Taxi drivers or bus drivers tend to demand higher fares in foreign currency. If you have the local currency on hand you won’t face this problem.

Bus

The cheapest method of transportation to get to Indira Gandhi International Airport is by bus. The bus fare is 50 rupee. It takes about 50 minutes to get to the airport from the city center. Buses run until 11 pm and depart from the Connaught Place area.

Metro

Public transportation in Delhi is provided by buses and the metro. The metro is the most profitable transportation alternative in terms of speed and price. The metro network in Delhi reaches almost every part of the city. To get to Indira Gandhi International Airport from the city center by metro you have to travel to the New Delhi Station. From this station you can get to the airport in about 20 minutes. The metro runs directly to the airport, stopping at Terminal 3.

Taxi

There are two types of taxicabs in Delhi that you can use for urban transportation. There are standard taxis whose fares are based on the kilometers traveled. These taxis can be called from any part of the city and provide comfortable transportation to the airport. Rickshaws are another type of ‘taxi’ transportation. However, rickshaws do not travel long distances. Rickshaws travel a maximum of 1-2 kilometers, making them ideal to use for a city tour. To get to the airport from the city center you can use a normal taxicab.

Airport Information

Indira Gandhi International Airport operates passenger services out of 2 terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Terminal 2 has been dedicated for special operations since 2010. There are plans for further expansion in the future.

The airport features a variety of services to ensure passengers’ needs are met as they wait for their flight or after they land. There are also many special services that passengers can benefit from. Indira Gandhi International Airport contains a hotel, spa services, lounges, duty free shops and famous brands like Mango and Hugo Boss where you can go shopping. The international terminal, Terminal 3, features sleeping pods that passengers can use as they wait for their departing flight. For more detailed information on these sleeping pods please visit Indira Gandhi International Airport’s website.

After landing at the airport, you can find many transportation alternatives for travelling to the city center. You can benefit from many options for travelling to the city center such as taxi, train or bus. You can also rent a car for a more comfortable transportation during your stay in the city.

Train

The railway system of the city is one of the most preferred transportation options. Although there is not a station in front of the terminal of Chennai Airport, you can reach the Tirusulam Railway Station, which is located 2 kilometers away, by walking or using a rickshaw. The cost of the auto rickshaws parking outside the domestic terminal of the airport is 30 Indian Rupee for 2 kilometers but this amount increases at night hours.

If you don’t have any luggage and think that you can find a place for yourself in the crowd, you can prefer this travel which will last 30 minutes. The wagons are clean and air-conditioned. The trains operate from the early hours of the morning until the midnight and you don’t wait too much at Tirusulam station. The ticket price is around 40 Indian Rupee and you can buy your ticket at the station.

Bus

When you go out of the Chennai Airport terminal, you will see the air-conditioned buses of the route 1B which will take you to the city center. The cost of travelling to the city center with these buses departing every 5 minutes is 45 Indian Rupee.

You can get information about the timetables of the bus route 18A, which goes directly to Chennai city center, by visiting the airport information desk. Travelling to the city center by using these buses which depart every hour takes about 40 minutes and it has the same price with the bus route 1B.

Another alternative is getting on one of the buses passing through the highway in front of the airport. You can signal for these buses which do not stop everywhere. You need to get information about the prices from the driver.

Taxi

The most practical and fastest way to get to the city center from Chennai Airport is using a taxi.
