About Algeria

Algeria, officially known as the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a significant center in North Africa, composed of a total of 48 regions. It is the second-largest country in Africa in terms of land area after Sudan. The name "Algeria" comes from the Arabic word "Al-Jaza'ir," which means "islands." Notably, Algeria is considered one of the most modern countries in Africa.
Stretching along the Mediterranean coast, Algeria features deserts, a Mediterranean climate, rich culture, cuisine, natural gas, oil, and agriculture. Its history dates back to the 12th century. The region was influenced by Phoenician merchants who also played a role in establishing settlements. Algeria is one of Africa's wealthiest nations, ranking fifth in natural gas production and fourth in natural gas exports. It is also among the top five oil producers. Agriculture, particularly chickpea cultivation, is another main livelihood. The country benefits significantly from its tourism sector, featuring historical sites and holiday resorts catering to ethnic and cultural tourism.
Bordered by Tunisia to the northeast, Libya to the east, Niger to the southeast, Mauritania and Mali to the southwest, and Morocco and Western Sahara to the west, two-thirds of Algeria's land is covered by the Sahara Desert. The northern parts have a Mediterranean climate, while the south experiences a desert climate. The hottest months are August and July. The capital city, Algiers, is an important port city, with a significant portion of maritime trade and sea tourism.
Other prominent cities known for tourism as well as modernity and welfare include Oran, Constantine, and Annaba. While the official language is Arabic, French and other languages are also spoken. Arab and Mediterranean cultures are blended harmoniously in Algeria's restaurants, streets, festivals, and many other areas.
Algeria hosts numerous festivals, many of which are music-themed, attracting visitors from around the world. Some notable festivals include the International Arab Film Festival, the International Andalusian and Ancient Music Festival, and the Festival du Ra (Oran Music Festival) held annually in September.
Traditional Algerian cuisine shares similarities with beloved dishes from Mediterranean cuisine. Popular dishes include "couscous," made from wheat and served with meat or vegetables, and "shakshuka," made with peppers, onions, and garlic.
