Located on the northwest of Mexico, Alamos is within the borders of the State of Sonora, one of the 31 states of the country. The city, whose establishment occurred as a result of the construction of a church in the region in 1630 by the missionaries, developed rapidly with the discovery of the silver mines in the later periods. It was recognized as a mining and religion center for a long time. During the Spanish and Andalusian colonial period, it had a picturesque and unique architectural texture that has survived until today.

Alamos is one of the rare cities where the Spanish colonial heritage has continued its existence. In this respect, it is accepted as the most gorgeous city of the colonial history. Alamos is a “special city” in Mexico in terms of many aspects. In 2000, the city was announced as a “National Monument” by Ernesto Zedillo, the president of the period. Thanks to the rich silver reserves it has, the city is today mentioned as “Silver City”. The city was named “Pueblo Magico” due to the historical richness and sensitivity shown by the people for this heritage. This title was given to the city by Mexican Secretariat of Tourism. The city is also popular in terms of having many different species of birds. The Sierra de Alamos-Rio Cuchujaqui Ecological Reserve, which is a center of attraction for bird watchers and is in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO, is home to 265 different bird species. The city has turned “bird watching” activity into a tourism movement. Plaza de Armas is the most popular center of the city in terms of hosting the structures of the colonial period. Colonial structures such as La Purisima Concepcion Church, La Capalla and Palacio Municipal are also located around Plaza de Armas.

In addition, La Carcel (Prison), which now serves as a cultural center as the Sonora History and Culture Museum, is among the other remarkable structures of the city. The city which is under the influence of the tropical savanna climate has a hot, dry, humid and warm atmosphere throughout the year. Alamos Airport is 2.1 kilometers of the city center.
