About Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport, one of the largest airports in the world, opened on October 29, 2018. Located on the European side of Istanbul in the Arnavutköy district, in the area between the villages of Tayakadın and Akpınar, the airport has earned a place on the list of the World's Best Airports.

Designed to handle 200 million passengers a year and offer flights to more than 300 destinations, Istanbul Airport features a duty-free area, a hotel, and stores from well-known brands. Throughout the day, a wide range of restaurants and cafés serve cuisine from around the world. Beyond passenger travel, Istanbul Airport is also a key air cargo transfer hub, positioned strategically between Asia and Europe.

Getting to the City Center from Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport is located on the European Side of the city, in the Arnavutköy district. You can get from the airport to the city center by bus, Havaist shuttle, metro, taxi, rental car, or private transfer.

Bus
  • H-1, H-2, H-3, H-6, and H-8 buses run from Istanbul Airport to various parts of the city, including Mecidiyeköy, Mahmutbey, Sultangazi, Sarıyer, and Halkalı.
  • Travel times are approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to Mecidiyeköy, 1 hour 45 minutes to Halkalı, 1 hour 30 minutes to Mahmutbey, 1 hour 25 minutes to Sultangazi, and 1 hour 50 minutes to Sarıyer. Journey times may vary depending on traffic.
  • You can buy bus tickets at the ticket booths or machines at the airport platforms, or online.
Metro
  • The M11 Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport metro line connects the airport to the city center.
  • The metro provides direct access to Arnavutköy, İhsaniye, Göktürk, Kemerburgaz, Hasdal, Kağıthane, and Gayrettepe.
  • At Gayrettepe station, you can transfer to the Metrobus, city buses, and the M1 Hacıosman – Yenikapı metro line.
  • The metro operates from 06:00 to 00:00.
  • The journey takes about 45 minutes on average.
Havaist
  • Havaist shuttle services run to Aksaray, Esenler Bus Terminal, Arnavutköy, Halkalı–Başakşehir, Silivri–Çatalca, Beylikdüzü, Avcılar–Bahçeşehir, Bakırköy, Kadıköy, Taksim, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
  • You can pay for Havaist online, at the ticket booths on the platforms, or by card on board. Some Havaist buses also accept Istanbul Kart.
  • Fares vary depending on the route.
Taxi
  • Orange, turquoise, and black taxis serve the route between Istanbul Airport and the city center.
  • Fixed fares apply to certain destinations in the city center.
  • Bridge crossings, bus terminal exit fees, and toll roads are paid by the passenger.
Car Rental
  • You can rent a car from companies at the airport, including Avec, Sixt, Hertz, Rent Go, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise, Garenta, and many more, and drive to the city center.
  • If you book before arriving, you can pick up your car directly without waiting in line.
  • With a rental car, you can easily reach the city center as well as Istanbul's historical and natural attractions, such as the Historic Peninsula, Taksim, Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Florya, Polonezköy, Çatalca, and Şile.
Transfer
  • A private transfer service offers a luxurious and comfortable ride from the airport to destinations across Istanbul.

Getting to Istanbul Airport from the City Center

Istanbul Atatürk Airport is accessible by taxi, airport shuttles, metro, and buses. You can also choose to drive your personal car and park in the parking lot for a certain fee. The airport is equipped with an outdoor lot and an indoor multi-story lot.  

Taxi

The fastest and most convenient way to get to Atatürk Airport is by taxi. However, when taking a taxi the most important factor to consider is the traffic. Hitting the road during rush hour runs the risk of missing your flight. If you plan to take a taxi to the airport we recommend checking the traffic before you leave and planning accordingly.

Havabus

The Havabus shuttle buses provide transportation between Atatürk Airport and central locations in the city. The Havataş shuttles provide service to and from Taksim and the Yenikapi IDO Pier every 30 minutes.

Bus

Atatürk Airport is also accessible from the city center by bus. You can get to Atatürk Airport using the TH-1 bus from Taksim and YH-1 bus from Yenikapi.

Metro

One of the fastest ways to get to the airport is by metro. The metro passes through many locations, such as Yenikapı, Aksaray, Fatih, Topkapı, and Esenler Otogar and goes directly into the airport.

Rental Cars

You can rent a car from rental agencies such as AVIS, Budget, or Europcar both at the airport and at various locations in the city. You can also return your rental vehicle to the airport branch of the aforementioned companies. If you are traveling between multiple places make sure to specify your vehicle pick up and drop off location.

Popeyes, Sbarro, Caffe Nero, Simit Sarayı, Cakes & Bakes, Turcuisine, Sweet Deligts, Quick Asia, Efes Beerport, The Greenport, Starbucks Coffee, Cafe-Inn, Eat & Go, Coca-Cola Cafe, Kitchenette, Flight Point and Zero Café are located in the international departures hall. Simit Sarayi is located in the domestic arrivals hall. Kantin, The Greenport, Kokpit, Tadında Anadolu, Cakes & Bakes, Starbucks Coffee, Cafe-Inn, Burger King and Sbarro are located in the domestic departures hall.

The Primeclass Lounge, Akbank Wings Lounge, Comfort Lounge, Emirates Lounge, Sky Team Lounge and TTNET Platin Lounge are located in the international terminal. The THY CIP Lounge, Akbank Wings Lounge and Primeclass Lounge are located in the domestic terminal. The ATÜ retail stores provide duty free shopping services.
