About Urgench
It is the administrative city of Harezm province of Uzbekistan. Population is around 140 thousand. The city is founded on the banks of Amu Derya River and Shavat Canal. It is located 450 kilometers west of the city of Bukhara. The tourist season is spring and autumn. It is 13 kilometers from the airport, from where direct and connected flights between Tashkent-Milan and Paris are operated by Uzbekistan Airways. Railway and highway are generally preferred for urban transportation.
The city which had a great development in the architectural field in the period of Altınordu Khanate; however the city has declined architecturally after the invasion of Timor. Most of the structures were destroyed and very few works survived. However, it started to develop again with the constructions of medresas and social complexes in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is possible to see the most beautiful examples of glazed tile works in Urgench buildings. The historical and touristic places of Urgench, the capital city of Harezm province, are as follows; Urgench Youth Lake Complex, Urgench Orthodox Church, Urgench Archaeological Site which is full of valuable findings and which have been the scene of uninterrupted settlement since nomadic Scythians period, and Kutluğ Timor Minaret, the highest minaret of Central Asia built in the 14th century.
