About Afyon

Afyon (Afyonkarahisar) is a Turkish city famous for its sucuk (spicy sausage), clotted cream, lokum (Turkish delight), and spas. It has 700,000 inhabitants and is located in the inner parts of the Aegean Region. Thanks to its healing thermal waters, many five-star luxury thermal and spa hotels started operating in recent years. This enlivened the tourism industry in the city. Specialty products like sucuk, clotted cream and lokum are sold at roadside facilities on the way south to Antalya, and for those that use this road, Afyon is more often than not a rest stop. The climate in Afyon is continental with hot and dry summers, and cold and usually snowy winters. Places to visit in Afyon include the Karahisar Castle, Archeological Museum, Ulu Cami (Great Mosque), Dervish Lodge, and the rock formations called Fairy Chimneys in Incehisar. If you have time, a Turkish bath or spa treatment is strongly recommended.

Afyonkarahisar hosts an extensive military airport, however, all civil aviation goes through the Zafer Airport. There are buses from the center of the province to the airport that lies 60 km outside of the city.
